Frequently asked questions
Safety, dental hygiene, age, sizing, storage, sourcing: we have gathered every question people actually ask us, with complete answers.
Safety and health
Can a natural chew break a tooth?
The risk exists with any hard treat, including a classic bone or a rigid toy. It mainly concerns dogs that try to crush their treat between their molars rather than gnawing it down gradually.
Three precautions cover the vast majority of cases: pick a hardness that matches your dog's temperament (whole antler is the hardest in our range, yak cheese the softest), keep the first sessions to 10-15 minutes, and supervise. If your dog has already fractured a tooth or has periodontal disease, ask your vet before introducing a hard chew.
Could my dog swallow a piece and choke?
This is the key precaution. Always remove the chew as soon as it becomes small enough to be swallowed whole — in practice, once it is smaller than the width of your dog's mouth.
Also start with a big enough size: the piece must be longer than your dog's muzzle. When in doubt between two sizes, take the larger one.
Do I need to supervise my dog while chewing?
Yes, as with any chew treat. Simply being in the room is enough: you don't need to sit next to your dog, just to be able to step in if the piece gets too small or if your dog is chewing unusually hard.
Do these chews cause digestive upsets?
They are generally very well tolerated because they contain no added fat, no grain and no additives. A few dogs may have softer stools during the first sessions, while they adjust.
To limit that risk, introduce them gradually: 10 to 15 minutes on day one, then build up over a week. Always leave fresh water available.
Does coffee wood contain caffeine?
No. Caffeine is concentrated in the beans and leaves of the coffee plant, not in the wood of the stem. Coffee wood chews therefore carry no risk of caffeine-related stimulation.
Can olive wood or coffee wood splinter?
That is precisely why we chose these two species rather than ordinary wood. They don't split into sharp shards: under chewing, they fray into soft fibres that the dog either spits out or swallows harmlessly. Pine wood and branches picked up in the park, on the other hand, do splinter — never give those to your dog.
Age, size and temperament
From what age can a puppy enjoy these?
From around 6 months, once the adult teeth are in place. Start with the softer products: yak cheese, coffee wood or split antler. Before 6 months, soft teething toys are a better option.
Can my senior dog still chew?
Often yes, as long as you adapt the hardness. Yak cheese and split antler are the most suitable, because they require less force. If your dog has lost teeth or has dental pain, check with your vet first.
Which size should I choose?
The chew must always be longer than your dog's muzzle. There is no single chart: each material has its own steps, published on its product page. Olive and coffee wood stop at 20 kg; beyond that, switch to antler.
If your dog chews very intensely, go one size up: the piece will last longer and stay well out of swallowing range.
My dog isn't interested in the chew — what now?
This is common with very hard products, which have a discreet smell. Rub the surface with a little warm water, or briefly run the piece under hot water to bring the scent back. You can also rub it lightly with a food your dog likes.
If nothing works, switch to split antler — the exposed marrow is far more appealing — or to yak cheese, whose milky smell works almost every time.
How much chewing time per day?
Between 15 and 45 minutes a day covers the chewing needs of most adult dogs. There is no need — and no benefit — in leaving the chew permanently available: offering it in sessions keeps the interest alive and limits tooth wear.
Storage and care
How do I store a part-used chew?
At room temperature, dry and well ventilated. Our products are naturally stable: they don't go mouldy or rancid because they contain no free water and no added fat. There is no need to refrigerate them.
What is the shelf life?
At least 12 months for yak cheese and 24 months or more for antler, olive wood and coffee wood, in their original packaging kept dry. Check the date printed on the pack.
Can I clean a part-used chew?
Yes: run it under hot water and scrub it with a clean brush, then leave it to air dry. Don't use soap, detergent or a dishwasher.
What do I do with the last piece of yak cheese?
That's the product's little trick: put the final stub in the microwave on a plate for 30 to 60 seconds at full power. It puffs up like popcorn and becomes a light, crunchy treat. Let it cool completely before giving it to your dog.
Do antlers stain carpets?
No. Unlike marrow bones or fatty treats, deer antler, olive wood and coffee wood contain no free fat: they leave no marks and no smell on fabrics.
Sourcing, quality and brand
Are deer killed to make your products?
No, never. Deer naturally shed their antlers every year at the end of winter and grow them back. Ours are collected from the ground after that natural shedding. It is an entirely renewable resource.
Where exactly do your materials come from?
Deer antlers come from European forest areas. Yak cheese is made in the Himalayan regions of Nepal. Olive wood comes from the pruning of Mediterranean olive groves. Coffee wood comes from South-East Asian plantations at the end of their productive cycle.
Are your products treated or varnished?
No chemical treatment, no varnish, no oil, no bleaching agent. Pieces are cleaned, dried, graded and mechanically sanded — that's all.
Where can I buy Vitalipets products?
Exclusively from our official Amazon store. There you get secure payment, fast delivery, order tracking and Amazon's returns policy. This site is our shop window: it helps you choose, but the sale happens on Amazon.
How do I contact you if something is wrong?
For anything order-related (delivery, returns, refunds), go through your Amazon account: it's the fastest route. For a product question, advice or a partnership, write to us directly via our contact page.
Why do you sell on Amazon rather than directly here?
Because we are a small team, and we would rather put our energy into the product than into logistics we would do less well. Amazon picks, ships, handles returns and after-sales care, with delivery times we could not match. This site therefore has no basket: it exists to help you choose the right material and the right size before you buy. It is also why you will find no prices here — they vary by size and by country, and Amazon changes them on its own. A price shown here would be wrong by the time you clicked.
