Split deer antler
Split deer antler for dogs
This is the product to start with. Same material as the whole antler, same origin, but the marrow is accessible from the first minute — which completely changes how the dog approaches it.
What “split” means, and why it changes everything
A whole deer antler is a closed cylinder: the cortex, the very dense outer layer, goes all the way round. The spongy marrow inside is only accessible through the two sawn ends. The dog has to work to get there.
A split antler is opened lengthwise. The marrow is exposed along the whole piece, flat. The dog sees it, smells it, and gets going immediately.
That is the whole difference between the two products, and it is not cosmetic. On a whole antler, a dog who has never chewed hard material can spend three days circling it without grasping what is expected of him. On a split one, the first session usually starts within a minute.
Why it is the best first time
A dog who gets discouraged by a chew does not come back to it easily. That holds for hard material generally, and it is why we almost always advise starting with the split.
Three concrete reasons. The reward is immediate: the marrow has taste and smell, the dog understands at once that there is something to be had. The effort is proportionate: the soft surface gives a little, he makes progress, he keeps going. And the piece stays safe: beneath the marrow the cortex is still there, as tough as on a whole antler.
In practice, a dog who gets through a split antler in a few days is ready for a whole one. A dog who takes two weeks probably needs nothing else.
Where the material comes from
Deer cast their antlers every year, between February and April depending on the region. The beam detaches by itself at the base, painlessly — it is a moult, not an injury. A new one grows straight after.
Our antlers are gathered from the forest floor after that natural cast. No animal is killed, none is approached. That sets this product radically apart from a horn, a hoof or a bone, all of which require slaughter.
The pieces are then cut and sanded by hand, in a workshop running on solar power. Nothing is treated, bleached, dyed or varnished. What reaches you is deer antler and nothing else.
How long it lasts, honestly
One to three weeks for a medium-sized dog chewing around twenty minutes a day. That is clearly less than a whole antler — one to three months — and it is normal: exposed marrow wears down fast.
What many people do not know: once the marrow is gone, the piece is not finished. A trough of cortex remains, exactly as dense as a whole antler, and it goes on being chewed for several more days. Many owners throw the piece away too early, believing it spent.
If the surface goes dry and loses its appeal before the piece is genuinely worn out, run it briefly under warm water. The moisture revives the smell and almost always relaunches interest.
What it provides, and what it does not contain
Deer antler naturally provides calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and collagen. These are the components of bone, present because that is what it is.
It contains no grain, no gluten, no sugar, no added fat, no flavouring, no preservative. For a dog prone to food intolerances there is nothing to monitor.
And it is odourless and non-greasy. No marks on the sofa, no smell on your hands, no stains on rugs. That often decides whether the product stays in the house.
On calories: prolonged chewing promotes a feeling of fullness and occupies the dog other than through food. Useful for a dog on a diet, allowing for what is actually ingested.
Which dog it suits — and which it does not
It suits the beginner. That is its main purpose: the dog who has never chewed hard material, the one disappointed by a product that was too difficult, the one you want to move from rubber to natural.
It suits the moderate chewer, who works his object for twenty to forty minutes then moves on, without trying to destroy it.
It suits small builds and senior dogs, for whom a large whole antler is out of proportion.
It does not suit the dog who crushes. Some dogs do not wear their toys down: they try to snap them with a molar. On any hard material, that action risks a tooth fracture. If your dog does this, this product is not for him — and the whole antler even less so.
It does not suit dogs under six months, whose adult teeth are not yet fully in place.
And it calls for veterinary advice where there has been a tooth fracture, periodontal disease or known fragility.
Choosing the right size
The rule, ahead of any chart: the piece must always be longer than your dog's mouth. As long as he cannot fit it in entirely, he cannot swallow it.
Split antler is sized by the weight of the piece, not its length. Only two sizes: M from 56 to 80 g for dogs from 5 to 10 kg, L from 81 to 118 g for dogs from 10 to 20 kg.
Above 20 kg this product does not exist in a suitable size. For a heavier dog, turn to whole deer antler, which goes up to 45 kg and beyond. That is a limit of the product, not a commercial preference.
If you hesitate between the two sizes, take the larger. An oversized piece simply lasts longer; an undersized piece is a choking risk.
As a natural product, every piece has a slightly different shape within its size band.

The first sessions
Jaw and gums need to adjust, even to a material more accessible than the whole antler.
Days 1 to 3: 10 to 15 minutes per session, supervised. Take the piece back afterwards, without making it a conflict — offer a swap.
Days 4 to 7: up to 30 minutes, once or twice a day.
After that: 20 to 40 minutes a day, in sessions. Putting it away between sessions holds interest far better than leaving it lying about.
One useful move for the very first time: offer the piece marrow side up. Your dog will spot it immediately, and you will not have to do anything else.
When to take it away
This is the only genuinely critical instruction in this guide.
Take the piece away and replace it as soon as it becomes small enough to be swallowed whole. The simple test: if it fits entirely inside your dog's mouth, it is too small.
The risk appears at the end of the product's life, never at the start. On a split antler that moment arrives sooner than on a whole one — it is thinner from the outset.
Check the cortex trough after each session: when it becomes a mere sliver, the piece has had its day.

The questions we are asked most
“Why does it last less than the whole one?” Because the marrow is exposed. It is the same trade-off as everywhere: what makes a product accessible also makes it quicker to consume.
“My dog finished it in three days, is that normal?” It means he is ready for a whole deer antler. It is the most reliable signal you have.
“Does it smell?” No. Deer antler is one of the few completely odourless chews of animal origin.
“Is it suitable for a puppy?” Not before six months, and not during teething.
“How long does it keep?” Indefinitely, at room temperature and dry. No refrigeration, no expiry date.
